Soumalya Bhowmik

Prime Minister's Research Fellow

Centre for Nanotechnology

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati

Hi! A warm welcome to my personal webpage. Myself Soumalya Bhowmik, and I'm a Prime Minister's Research Fellow (PMRF) in the field of Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering at the Centre for Nanotechnology, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. I got myself enrolled at IITG in December 2019 under the supervision of Prof. Parameswar Krishnan Iyer. Before starting my journey as a research scholar I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Industrial Chemistry from Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, University of Calcutta and Master's degree in Materials Science (Nano) from Dept. of Applied Physics, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (MSU, Baroda), securing gold medal in both the occasions. Before my formal joining as a doctoral fellow, I worked as a Tata Steel Research Fellow under the supervision of Prof. Sabyasachi Sarkar (Retd. Professor from IITK) at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIESTS). My present work is mainly focused on "Artificial Photosynthesis" using earth abundant and biocompatible semiconductor/electron transport platforms like graphitic carbon nitride, lacunary POMs and N-doped graphene oxide. I was conferred with the highly prestigious Prime Minister's Research Fellowship in the December 2020 cycle to pursue state of the art original research during the tenure of my doctoral studies.

Research Interests

  • Elementally and molecularly modified Carbon nitride based photocatalysts.

  • Structure-property relationships in molecularly modified carbon nitrides.

  • Metal chalcogenide and pnictide based semiconductor photocatalysts for solar energy harvesting via Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) and CO2 Photoreduction (CRR).

  • Polyoxometalate (POM) based electron reservoirs and transporters.

  • Doped graphene oxides for photocatalytic applications.

  • Earth abundant and sustainable CRR and HER cocatalysts.

  • Base metal semiconductor systems for photo/photoelectro/electrocatalysis.

  • Conjugated polymer semiconductors.

  • Inorganic/Organic synthesis of small molecules/precursors.

  • Precursor Inks.
